A simple guide to electronic components.
By request:- A basic guide to identifying components and their functions for those who are new to electronics. This is a work in progress, and I welcome feedback from you guys on whether I should break it down into more manageable chunks. I’ve kept the maths to a minimum, since it can be off-putting to someone just getting started in electronics.
The idea of this video is to slot in some more of the jigsaw pieces involved in learning electronics, when you start to recognise components, but aren’t quite sure what they are or what they do.
It’s tricky to squeeze even the basics into a single video, and I’ve just realised how long this one is (and why it took all night to upload).
If you enjoy my videos you can support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and components at https://www.patreon.com/bigclive
would u describe mosfets, polisters, thermistors, bridge rectifier
To anyone who may see this and can help, iv been looking for the data sheet or diagram/pinout of a
"toshiba ta8903 sn". I can’t seem to find much of anything about it anywhere but I know the part exists and that’s what its labelled.
@6:26 "So, this is pretty much the construction of capacitors, but, not using cardboard and aluminum foil.."
Ever heard of a place called "Chi-Nah"..?
Great job, thanks
I invented a mnemonic for resistor colour coding when I was about 15 (very many years ago!). It’s not especially funny or clever, but I still remember it: Black Briar Roses Often Yield Great Buckets (of) Very Grey Whitewash.
when attempting to understand electronics, i always think of both conventional and non conventional current flow. WHAT SHOUDL I STICK WITH?! i like to understand things practically, so nonconventional flow makes much more sense. but theory applies conventional. should i just stick with one way of understanding and learning?
Is there a video explaining when and why you would use the different components?
Thank you Sir .
Nice
classic video Clive- great stuff
I wonder why it sooo much easier to remember a racist phrase like "black boys ride our young girls?"
"it’s a rich beige" sounds so much like salesman talk 🤣
Thank you. Easy to understand and good knowledge.
You are a great engineer! Thank you for teaching me! EVERYONE, SUBSCRIBE!!!!!
the capacitor i would describe with high and low air pressure. enjoyed the video. love electronics
This is the best explanation of these things I’ve ever heard. Subscribed.
15:03 Big Clive: "somethingsomething *causes explosion…big mess* …"
Me: **Pauses video. Searches "exploding capacitor ". Watches video. Not disappointed.**
This was a really great intro in simple to understand language. Do you have any further tutorials? I see you have various vids on specific equipment, but I am not finding simple electronics primers. I am trying to find good tutorials in learning circuit design.
Great videos, minor tip, try not to fiddle quite so much 8)
Excellent. You have the gift of stating things in a concise clear way. So often I’ve watched these kinds of videos and they are dreadfully confusing. For me it would be helpful in smaller portions as I’ve yet to figure out a way of bookmarking sections of a Youtube video.
Great one
Complexity in explanation don’t exist
✌️
Nice pen lol
Thank you !!!! Love learning new thing. New sub here
I was 8 min in before I realized that was just a picture of components. Kept waiting for him him to pick up that big capacitor but it never happened lol
Haha beige good old billy Connolly hates that colour, ask him you might know him your Scottish 😏 ps love your Channel iv been doing a bit my self on what iv learnt of you 👍
I remember an article from a 70’s publication called Hobby Electronics in which they amusingly describe coils as appearing to be well designed short circuits, and capacitors as appearing to be well engineered open circuits!

Superb Clive. My dad had taught me this way to read resistor values. BBROYOFGREATBRITAINHAD AVERYGOODWIFE .
Back in a basic electronics components class I had, we were working on a basic thermometer circuit that would light a white. The room went from noisy to extremely quite after we heard something that sounded like a gun going off. Turns out someone connected the white led backwards and managed to get it to explode by "accident"
Clive, I am trying to repair my impact driver charger, as one of the resistors has gone pop. It appears to have Black Red Red Silver Gold banding.
Checking the Colour Code it comes out at 0.22 ohms is this correct. If so where do I get one from as I have tried on-line but they look nothing like what I have got.. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your presentations over the years, thank you .
I wish all my teachers were as good as him, simple, precise and giving friendly feeling.
Someone may have beat me to it, but cathode is represented by a ‘K’ because _kathode_ is how it was originally spelled. The reason for this is that kathode is a Latinised form of the Greek word _kathodos_ , meaning "a way down".
Spelled with a K because it comes from German.
Cathode is K, because C had already been reserved for collector I believe.
Nano fart.
Lol
First min of this video… Worshiping it
Those things that look like barrels with two wires and cross on top of a smaller one leaned into the bigger one…will they just get melted where they touched?? And what is a good starting multimeter?? I’m looking for something this idiot can understand….
Clive, you’re the first person to make me actually understand all the little thingies i use to hookup other thingies to my main thingies. Not only do i finally understand what they do, i can now even come up with ideas how to do stuff nobody has done before (or at least hasn’t published instructions). School education is crap.
if you can tell working principle them please because I want know it!!!!!!
@36:39 , . . . The "ruder ones" are easiest to remember because of the ’emotional’ factor. When something ‘triggers’ an emotion, it’s more easily recognized and therefore, more easily recalled. This example is more non-politically correct. I, personally, would lend my memory to something a bit more neutral and less *polarizing😉* But of course, whatever works for you!!!
“Let’s keep it simple” – still confused as hell
Awesome videos !
You’re such an enthusiastic teacher. Wonderful video! : )
Cathode here in the States
I was taught Red was Rape in my city and guilds class for resistor…. very non-pc
Good
Resistor colour codes we were taught Correct about the bad ones being more memorable.):

Aaaargh, drop the pen cap from your left hand please. So far, excellent video.
Whats a nano fart?
Instructions unclear, lit the fire in the bothy and started sipping a whiskey.
